On 19 May 2012, diplomats and home-based families of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) diplomatic community in South Africa came together at the Pretoria East Primary School for the ASEAN Sports & Games Day 2012.  The event was organized by the ASEAN Pretoria Committee (APC), currently chaired by the Ambassador of Myanmar.

The annual event brings together more than one hundred diplomats, home-based staffs and family members from the 7 ASEAN Missions located in Pretoria (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam) in a day of camaraderie, friendship and fun as they take part in sports and games activities such as volleyball, chair ball, table-tennis, tug-of-war, sack races and even a golf putting contest by the Heads of Missions.  This was followed by a delicious lunch of dishes contributed by all the diplomatic missions involved.  It was a day of laughter and good cheer for all and exemplified the common values and spirit of cooperation and friendship shared by the people of the ASEAN family.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN is the preeminent regional grouping for the Southeast Asian region.  Its membership comprises of ten countries in Southeast Asia, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  Since its founding in 1967, ASEAN has grown into one of the world's most vibrant and forward looking gathering of nations, with a total population of more than 575 million people, covering an area of 4.5 million square kilometers and a total combined GDP of more than USD 737 Billion.
