Thailand first established consular relations with South Africa on 9 March 1992, with South Africa opening its Consulate-General in Bangkok in September 1992 and Thailand opening its Consulate-General in Johannesburg, the center of business activities in South Africa, in October 1992.

The consulates were later upgraded to full embassies after the formal establishment of diplomatic relations on 9 December 1993, with Thailand opening its Embassy in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa, in lieu of the Consulate-General in Johannesburg. The first Embassy was located at 840 Church Street, Eastwood, Pretoria.

In July 2000, the Embassy moved to the present location at 248 Hill Street, joining the Thai Office of Commercial Affairs which already occupied part of the premise.

The location, with its ample spaces & beautiful lawn, along with its ideal location at the corner of Hill and Pretorius streets, had been deemed as very suitable for locating Thailand’s representative offices in South Africa under one common address. This was confirmed when in September 2008, the Thai Defense Attaché Office also opened its doors within the same premises. The compound’s beautiful lawn became even more beautiful and distinctive in 2003 with the construction of a beautiful, authentic traditional Thai Pavilion or “Sala Thai” at one end to commemorate the 10^th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and South Africa.
